Elkie Brooks - nascida em Broughton (Grande Manchester), a 25 de Fevereiro de 1945 - é uma cantora inglesa, que antes de empreender uma carreira-solo, fez parte do conjunto Vinegar Joe. É conhecida pela sua voz forte e marcante.
Vida e carreira
Brooks nasceu em 1945, como Elaine Bookbinder, de pais judeus em Broughton (Grande Manchester) e cresceu em Prestwich. Frequentou a North Salford Secondary Modern School.
Cantora profissional desde os quinze anos, a estreia profissional de Brooks ocorreu com um cover da canção de Etta James, "Something's Got A Hold On Me", lançada pela Decca em 1964. Elkie passou a maior parte da década de 1960 na cena do jazz britânica. No início dessa década, integrou a banda de apoio de um espetáculo natalício dos Beatles em Londres. Também participou de tournées nos Estados Unidos com a banda The Animals, entre outros grupos.
Após conhecer Pete Gage, com quem se viria a casar, viria a participar da banda Vinegar Joe, juntamente com Gage e Robert Palmer. Elkie ganhou reputação da "selvagem" da banda, em função da vivacidade das suas apresentações. Após três álbuns, a banda dissolveu-se em 1974, com Brooks e Palmer a seguir carreiras a solo. Após algum tempo nos Estados Unidos com uma banda de boogie, Elkie retornouaà Inglaterra. O seu primeiro álbum a solo na A&M Records foi "Rich Man's Woman", de 1975. Elkie teve problemas em função da capa do álbum, que foi considerada ultrajante na época (seminua, Elkie exibia um dos seus seios).
Desde então, Elkie Brooks manteve uma carreira constante, fazendo tournées quase todos os anos desde o início da sua carreira a solo. A sua tournée de 1982 foi vista por mais de 140.000 pessoas em apenas três meses. Apresentou-se em quase todo os palcos importantes do Reino Unido, incluindo-se na lista lugares como: London Palladium, Dominion Theatre, Hammersmith Apollo, Ronnie Scott's, Royal Albert Hall and Wembley Arena.
Família
Em 1978, Elkie Brooks casou-se com o engenheiro de som Trevor Jordan, que tem sido o seu engenheiro de som desde 1977. O casal tem dois filhos.
